The Milwaukee Trail Extension opening celebration Sunday was a great success in spite of the weather! Many thanks to Jeremy Flesch and all the other neighbors who made it happen and invited the community to share. Thanks especially to those neighbors who worked on the project, and especially to those who granted easements so this connection from Russell to Davis Streets could become a reality after well over a decade of work by Missoula Parks and Recreation staff and others. Many thanks to trails manager Dave Shaw and open space manager Jackie Corday for their tireless work, as well as Donna Gaukler and others at Parks and Recreation. Finally, thanks to the voters of Missoula City and County for passing the 2006 Open Space Bond which supplied the money to buy the easements. This is one of those projects that will positively impact thousands of people in the Missoula area. Included in the project is a safe bike-ped crossing at Russell Street.

Not sure if you want to be part of an organization that wants you as a member?? Consider this: Bike/Walk Alliance for Missoula, a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, is a member driven advocacy group that influences bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the Five Valley region from the proposed Lolo-Missoula Trail to the bike lanes striping Higgins Ave North. We are helping shape the Active Transportation Plan of Missoula and have a hand in much of the bike lanes downtown. If you have walked or biked around town you have probably benefited from our work. BWAM works in solidarity with other bicycling organizations in Missoula and waxes a festive attitude for special events like PEDal Fest Missoula, New Belguim Brewing Clips of Faith Film and Beer Tour, Sunday Streets, and Bike Walk Bus Week. Now, be a part of the effective organization that helps make biking and walking a compelling choice!!

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, the festivities continue with BWAM’s Annual Meeting at 7:00pm in the lower center of Christ the King Church–1400 Gerald Ave. (Corner of Keith and Gerald).
